Cardiff Racing is a Formula Student team made up of students at Cardiff University, who annually design and build a single seater race car for entry into IMechE Formula Student competition as well as other European FSAE Competitions. The team comprises of fourth year lead students who have chosen projects related to the car, as well as volunteers from all years. A close-knit team, every member brings a different set of skills that fully rounds Cardiff Racing, resulting in excellent levels of team work, professionalism and a positive atmosphere on which the team prides itself.
Cardiff Racing is student driven, every aspect of the team and the car is organised, designed, and lead by students, with various levels of training and qualifications. From weekly update meetings to testing sessions, workshop builds to socials, everyone involved gains new skills and knowledge from the Formula Student experience. Whether it's pure engineering, business, or marketing, Cardiff Racing doesn't just look to win, but to usher in the next generation of industry ready Engineers.
Cardiff University is part of the GE3 group. This group comprises of 74 engineering universities that believe in international educational experiences. The group support students to travel between member universities to spend a semester studying abroad.
Formula Student is an international competition and through the GE3 Cardiff Racing were able to meet up with two other member universities whilst away competing in Europe in the summer of 2015.
The Formula Student events are what months of design, building, and refinement of each year's entry car lead up too. Cardiff Racing competes across Europe, focusing its efforts on the Formula Student UK event, which attracts in excess of 2000 students each year. The Formula Student UK event is held annually at a UK racing circuit, often Silverstone, and over the course of the competition, the cars and teams are put through their paces and tested to the limits to find the best overall package.
In the 19th year of FSUK, Cardiff Racing made history and became the first UK team to win the prestigious event, made even more special as it also marked the 40th anniversary of Tom Pryce's passing, still the only Welshman to race in Formula 1.
At each event, the cars are put through two types of testing; static and dynamic. The static events are judged on cost of the car, business management and design, with the aim of judging the team efforts and abilities beyond the car's performance. The dynamic events consist of a figure of eight skid pan trial, acceleration and sprint events, and finally the endurance event. The events prove the cars performance, reliability and economy. Each team is given a score for each event that is then totalled to give them a final score and a ranking for the event.
